Family of Christ Presbyterian Church to Resurrect Historical Greeley House
A recent Sunday afternoon congregational meeting ended with a small church taking on a big project. As a result, a century-old American foursquare house will soon move 3.7 miles through the streets of Greeley to its new home at Family of Christ Presbyterian Church. This remarkable journey is befitting a house with such a rich history and a promising future. Designed by pioneering female architect Bessie Smith, this 1907-built home will begin its new life as a community center after undergoing a complete renovation.
While Family of Christ has taken the lead, this project has been, and will continue to be a community endeavor. Creating space for a new municipal building, the City of Greeley awarded the house to the church after reviewing its community-minded proposal. Going forward, Family of Christ is looking for additional partners to help rehabilitate the house and carry out the community center’s mission of “Honoring History, Practicing Hospitality, and Seeking Harmony.” The first of these to step up has been Historic Greeley, Inc., which already has pledged financial and human resources toward restoring and preserving the home’s glory. The two-year renovation process will begin in 2016, and once completed the doors of this historic treasure will open to the Greeley community. With the possibility to provide space for everything from cooking clubs to yoga studios, the community center’s intent focus will be to build harmonious relationships across lines of race, creed, language, and all other human-made divisions.
Family of Christ will be hosting a winter campaign through generosity.com to raise funds for building the Bessie Smith House’s new foundation.
